In firefox, if I type in 'yahoo mail' it will go directly to the yahoo mail webpage, whereas in opera, it will instead go to the google search results for 'yahoo mail'.

They arnt relay settings its just taking your browser history ie. the stuff you search for and the sites you got to and takes it into account before it searches and if you have been to the site more than once or alot then it migopera firefoxht have i selected and could just be that you hit enter when it selected instead or it maybe that opera sucks or Firefox sucks and you think its good
just put a shortcut on your desktop to take you to yahoo mail
